Spring has sprung in the Coast Mountains! It is a wonderful time to enjoy many of my passions, from celebrating BC Wine Month digging into my personal cellar to affirm how well our wines age, to getting muddy on my mountain bike every day, to planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, and getting my outdoor growing space ready for those little plants and the bounty to come.
Our team at Watermark has been busy planning Cornucopia for November, but also the exciting line up of weekend events throughout the entire month of June for Nourish, Whistler’s health and wellness programming. This year there are well over 60 events to experience, and I am so excited to not only be involved in the food and drink events but also hosting a Gardening 101 session on the final Saturday.
I love sharing my passions with you, which is usually just delicious food and drink, so I’m super excited to show my farming roots and bring you into my world of growing food. I come from likely thousands of years of Ukrainian farmers, having grown up on farm in east central Saskatchewan. It isn’t a choice for me – though the physical and especially mental health benefits of gardening have quite literally saved me – it is a need to grow that is built into my genetic code. The rewards of growing even one little plant, especially one that you can eat, are numerous. Come and learn from the mistakes I’ve already made growing in a variety of climates, from ultra-short-season rural Saskatchewan, to tricky-but-not- impossible Whistler, and glorious Pemberton.
So, off I go to my personal ‘seed bank’ – I store my seeds in my cool downstairs with my wine collection of course – to choose what I’ll be planting for you to take home and grow from my session on June 28.
